In 2018, superhero stories courtesy of Marvel Studios (Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp) and animated adventures like Incredibles 2 and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, took kid nation by storm. But US Senator Kamala Harris is here to shine a light on the heroes in our everyday lives with her new children’s book, Superheroes Are Everywhere.

In the colorful picture book, illustrated by Mechal Renee Roe, the newly-announced presidential candidate empowers her young readers to understand that superheroes are not just caped crusaders on the big screen. Heroes can be parents, teachers, siblings, friends and, yes, even themselves.

The book begins and ends with pages of personal photographs from Harris’s own childhood, each with captions from the senator herself. Superheroes follows her journey through life at nearly every distinguished age she learned who real superheroes were and the lessons they taught, e.g. “Heroes make you feel special,” “Heroes are kind,” “Heroes stand up for what’s right.” These heroes helped shape Harris into who she is today, her own version of a superhero fighting “for the people.”

Characters of different nationalities and all abilities are featured to better represent diversity (because not every hero is a white male without a disability) throughout the book, with the takeaway being that the very best version of yourself is the key to earning your cape. The book ends with a pledge, dubbed The Hero Code, for readers to take that officially anoints them with superhero status.

For parents looking for a simple and beautiful way to teach their kids the value of compassion, this book is the way to go. A Spanish language version, Los Superhéroes están en todas partes, will be released in May.
