If you don’t have the glorious scent of pine filling your home already, then make a day of it and choose a tree from a local Christmas tree farm. We’ve compiled our 2018 list (and checked it twice) of the best local tree farms, so corral your family for a day of holiday excitement and adorable photo ops.

4D Farm
Dates: Nov 24 ’til the trees run out
Hours: Sat 9am–4pm; Sun 1–4pm
Tree prices: $50 for the first 7 feet, $10 per foot over 7 feet
Cost: Free admission
Activities: Join 4D Farm to cut your own Leyland Cypress or “Blue Ice” Arizona Cypress before they run out — which may be as early as the second week of December. After doing the hard work, hop on a tractor to enjoy the farm by hayride, shop at their holiday market or warm up in the store with complimentary cookies and cider. Outside food welcome, but please leave pets at home.

Kadee Farm
Dates: Nov 23–Dec 23
Black Friday hours: 10am–6pm
Regular hours: Mon–Fri 2–6pm; Sat–Sun 10am–6pm
Tree prices: Start at $42 for Virginia Pine and Douglas Fir; $50 for Fraser Fir; $72 for Noble Fir
Cost: Free admission
Activities: Sip some complimentary apple cider while you choose and cut your tree in the rustic country setting of Kadee Farm an hour east of Collin County. While you relax with foodstuffs at a picnic table or browse the gift shop for Christmas goods and handmade wreaths, your kids can have fun on the maze, hay jump, playground, petting corral and swinging tree (a huge pecan tree decked with swings).

Lone Star Pines
Dates: Nov 23- Dec 16
Regular hours: Sat–Sun 9am–dark
Tree prices: $7 per foot when you cut your own
Cost: Free admission
Activities: Ride a hayride wagon out to the fields to cut your tree, then grab concessions and free coffee or cider and relax in the picnic area. Be sure to bring your camera; Santa will be at the farm for photo ops beginning the day after Thanksgiving. Before you go, browse the gift shop for fresh wreaths and other holiday décor.

Mainstay Farm
Dates: Nov 23 ’til the trees are gone
Regular hours: Sat 10am–5:30pm; Sun 12:30–5:30pm
Tree prices: $49 and up for all varieties
Cost: $14.95/gate, $11.95/online; tree shoppers will received $9.95 off each tree upon entry; some attractions cost extra
Activities: Head to Mainstay Farm for hand-dipped ice cream, coke floats, funnel cakes and other goodies from the Filling Station, plus attractions like the 100-foot-long Super Chute Slide, Flying Fox ride, Pedal Kart racetrack, duck races, hayrides, swings, jumping pillow, mazes and more. And don’t forget to visit Haymarket, a milking parlor-turned-gift shop that houses unique and handcrafted items along with fresh wreaths, garlands and greenery. Indoor restrooms are a plus.

McNew Star M Plantation

Tree prices: $25 and up for Virginia Pine, Leyland and Arizona Cypress; $50 and up for pre-cut Fraser Fir and Concolor Fir
Cost: Free admission; some attractions cost extra
Activities: Browse the gift shop for ornaments and other décor while the kids take a train ride, get their face painted, romp on the playground and complete the Nature Trail Game. Hot chocolate, ice cream and other concessions are available, but you’re welcome to bring a picnic.

Sunset Hill Tree Farm
Dates: Nov 23 ’til the trees are gone
Regular hours: Sat–Sun 8am–5pm
Tree prices: $58 and up for a 6 foot pre-cut
Cost: Free admission except Saturday night after Thanksgiving ($8 per person)
Activities: Join Sunset Hill Farm on Saturday night after Thanksgiving for Olde Tyme Christmas. Take a caroling hayride and watch actors play out the nativity. Then hang around for live music, horseback rides, a kiddie train and a bounce house, plus wreath-making demonstrations and a Christmas store. On other days, admission is free, so check out the farm zoo, duck races, hayride and playground. Concessions are always available, or feel free to bring a picnic.

Wintergreen Christmas Tree Farm

Tree prices: Pricing not provided over the phone
Cost: Free admission; $5 for activity wristband
Activities: Hop on board a free hayride at Wintergreen Farm out to 13 acres of trees to choose and cut the perfect centerpiece for your living room. And take your time – there’s also a train ride, bullhorn ring toss and playground for the kiddos (and plenty of photo ops for you, just bring your camera). Cold drinks and sandwiches are available on-site.

YesterLand Farm

Cost: Free admission; some attractions cost extra; $15.95 Christmas Amazement Pass for unlimited rides
Activities: Choose and cut your own Texas-grown Christmas tree at YesterLand Farm in Canton, then go on a wagon train ride, visit the farm zoo, race rubber ducks, bounce around on the playground – and that’s just the complimentary stuff. The Christmas Corn Maze and fair-reminiscent amusement rides cost a little extra. Bring your camera and a picnic basket if you please, but concessions are available (funnel cake, anyone?).
