Welcome to the Neighborhood
Irving is the crossroads of North Texas, with easy access to Dallas and Fort Worth (and anywhere in the world via DFW Airport). But there’s plenty to do without leaving the city—or really, cities: Irving and Las Colinas are distinct communities with lots of opportunities for outdoor fun, a thriving social scene for the adults and funky festivals for the whole family. And now that the new Toyota Music Factory has moved in, Irving is a destination in its own right.

Chow Down
● BIG STATE FOUNTAIN GRILL
This mid-century soda fountain is like a time warp, complete with red vinyl swivel chairs at the bar, old-fashioned milkshakes and a gift store with lots of candy. Its standard diner fare (read: stuff the kids will eat) can draw big crowds when there’s an event in downtown Irving—we recommend going on a quieter day.
100 E. Irving Blvd., Irving, 214/307-5000; bigstatefountaingrill.com

● MODERN MARKET
Fresh, healthy ingredients straight from farm to table—and a kids’ menu with appealing choices like grilled cheese and mac and cheese (and BYO salad, if your kid is ahead of the curve). Ask about the kids-eat-free deal on Mondays if you’re dining in.

Family Factor
IRVING SPRAY PARKS
Sea creatures spout water from their mouths at these two splash pads: one outside the Northwest Park Rec Center and steps away from a covered playground and the park pond, the other at Southwest Park nearby four softball fields, a soccer field and playground.

● PLAY STREET MUSEUM
Unstructured, imaginative play is on the menu rain or shine in this college-themed indoor play space, where littles can engage in hands-on activities that may inspire future careers as a doctor, scientist or architect on a mini university campus.

● THE TUBES & CUPPA ESPRESSO BAR
Irving Bible Church has the perfect setup for a hot, cold or rainy day: two indoor play areas (one for big kids, one for tots) and a top-notch, cozy coffee bar, both open to the public seven days a week. Bookmark this venue for birthdays too.
2435 Kinwest Parkway, Irving, 972/560-4600; irvingbible.org/buildinginfo

● WEST IRVING AQUATIC CENTER
Look for the clock tower as you drive up and take the pedestrian bridge over the creek to this seasonal, outdoor facility with seemingly every type of water feature, from zero-depth entry into a lap pool and a kiddie area to two large body slides and even a rock-climbing wall over the pool.
