French Style in the City

Five years ago, Dena Horowitz and her husband, Mike, fell in love with a house even though it was only in the early stages of development. Driving by while staking out homes for sale (in order to live closer to their sons’ schools), the Horowitzs bought the dwelling as it was being framed and finished out just the way they like it – French country style.

Horowitz definitely has an eye for style, which is apparent throughout her Bluffview abode. As a professional closet organizer (a business she co-owns with a friend) – she has to! From the calming monochromatic bedroom, to the French country kitchen and dining area, the house is true to its inspiration. Horowitz uses brightly colored accents, such as yellow tulips and limes to add color to her wood and earth-toned color scheme, as well as vibrantly colored ceramic vases and pitchers.

The living room is dark and cozy – perfect for a movie on a rainy Saturday afternoon. In order to increase the light flowing through the house, and the living room in particular, the Horowitzs changed out the solid-wood door for one that would allow plenty of light in.

In her bedroom, though, it’s all about white against dark wood furniture for a clean and soothing feel. Pillows piled high and bright white sheets make the bed an inviting place to relax, especially while peering out the windows to the leafy backyard — where the Horowitzs like to gather with their two boys, ages 13 and 14. With a custom-created pool, hammock and a seating area with an outdoor fireplace, it’s perfect for entertaining friends of all ages.
