Heather Ormand, 38, may be a first-time mom-to-be, but she’s already well-versed in what it means to take care of and protect a child. As chief operations officer at Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center (DCAC), she’s dedicated the last three and a half years to the investigation and prosecution of child abuse cases in Dallas County. Heather and her husband, Jason, a freelance photographer and filmmaker, live in the Casa Linda neighborhood of East Dallas and had their first child in early September.

TELL ME ABOUT FINDING OUT YOU WERE PREGNANT.
Jason and I were on Christmas vacation with his family on a ranch in South Texas. We’d been trying and I was supposed to start my period when we were down there. When I didn’t, we had to find an excuse to sneak away from his family and get a test. We said we had to go to the grocery store — everyone was confused because we were in the middle of nowhere and we already had groceries. When I took the test it actually came back negative and we just thought I was late. After we drove back to Dallas, I took another test on New Year’s Eve and it was positive!

DID YOU ALWAYS WANT KIDS?
We always wanted children; we even talked about it the first year we were dating. When we started going out, I was 33 and it was absolutely at the top of mind. Since he’s six years younger than me, I thought he might want to delay family planning for a while. We were very open to adoption and always discussed it as a potential option.

HOW HAVE YOU BEEN FEELING?
Really good. She’s been healthy and I haven’t had any morning sickness or anything. One thing that’s been really interesting is how squished my lung capacity has become. I’m a runner and it’s difficult running, walking up and down stairs or really anything that requires breathing! It’s amazing that your body just does all of this to accommodate the baby — everything shifts and it’s entirely out of your control.

ARE YOU STILL RUNNING?
No, my doctor said to keep my heart rate under 140. I’ve switched over to swimming, doing the elliptical and just walking. I still work out about 4–5 times a week. We really want to do a natural childbirth and it’s better if you’re in shape.

ANY LABOR AND DELIVERY FEARS?
Not really. The biggest thing we’ve done for ourselves is hiring a doula. Obviously neither of us has ever done this before and it has been so reassuring to have her there to support us and pass along her knowledge. It’s really put us at ease. We’ve also done four weeks of labor and delivery classes at the hospital. We might even be overprepared but we are just so excited to meet our baby girl.

IS YOUR HUSBAND EXCITED ABOUT HAVING A LITTLE GIRL?
He’s absolutely ecstatic. He’s very empathetic, kind and loving, and he’s so excited about having this sweet little girl to love and protect. At the beginning, I’m the one who felt a little more pressure because I want to be a good role model. There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with raising a girl. I never want to say anything negative about my body around her because I want her to be confident. I’m happy now and so excited. It’s an awesome responsibility.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT MOTHERHOOD?
I’m looking forward to the opportunity to raise a girl, in this century, at this exact point in time. After she’s born, I’ll stay home for three months but will then go back to working full-time while Jason stays home with her. She’ll never know a world where it’s not normal to have your mom work and your dad stay home. She’s not going to have any boundaries or limits.
