The sixth annual McKinney Tour de Coop is an educational tour of urban, backyard chicken coops. Join the coop tour stops around the historic district to see how McKinney has joined the self-sustainability movement. Proceeds benefit the Historic Chestnut Square and Farmers Market.

This is a family-friendly event where you will tour some of McKinney’s chicken coops, learn how to start your own coop and listen to a lecture on starting your own coop.

This unique event allows the future hobbyist or curious spectators an opportunity to get an intimate look at several interpretations of what constitutes an ideal backyard chicken coop set-up.

Owning backyard hens is also a great way to teach young children become more involved in their environment and become a responsible care-taker. Owning a small quantity of precious laying hens that a child helped rear from a baby hatchling will quickly teach a very valuable life lesson of  cause and effect. Image the joy your child will experience when it runs to the coop to see if hens have laid any eggs. 

New this year: Purchase raffle tickets ($10 each) for a chance to win a custom-made, queen-size quilt by local quilter Alice Leisure, valued at over $1,000. The quilt features 2018 Coop T-shirt design by McKinney artist Theresa Johnston.
